The Real Reason France Collapsed So Quickly In World War Two
Just before dawn on 10 May 1940 the largest concentration of motorised vehicles in history roared into action. After months of quiet it was the start of Hitler’s invasion of the West. What followed was a stunning combination of new tactics and new technologies that left Britain and France - two world superpowers - reeling. Within 6 weeks the latter would sign a humiliating armistice, ensuring that almost all of continental Europe had fallen under the grip of Nazi rule.
But why did France fall so quickly? In this documentary Dan Snow tells the story of the 6 weeks that led to the Fall of France in 1940 and how its outcome helped shape the course of the 20th century.

Drachinifel (Naval engineering historian) has a theory that the arguably thin decks of HMS Hood were not the cause of its magazine explosion. Hood at speed has a positive wave along forward 50% of the hull length. The aft half developed negative wave that exposed her hull bow the armour belt. A lucky shell entering here would have nothing to stop it causing tremendous damage. Impossible? HMS Prince of Wales was hit beneath her B turret by a shell that stopped by her keel. The shell had entered backwards got decapped and failed to explode.

This video should be titled: “Why the British Collapsed so quickly in May 1940 and started evacuating via Dunkirk in just 16 days (SIXTEEN!) from the beginning of the actual Battle of France, leaving their French allies…who they had convinced they would be going to war WITH because of the invasion of Poland…to fight alone for a further 3 weeks in a, by then, hopeless situation”. Granted that title isn’t quite as ‘punchy’ or, dare one say, even “click-baity”; nor does it serve to perpetuate the myth that the French were cowardly and all too ready to surrender. Nah, let’s not actually address some of the false stereotypes. Let’s keep the miracle ‘victory’ (because that’s how it’s often portrayed) of the ‘Dunkirk Spirit’ alive. And, let’s do that whilst keeping a grossly disingenuous lie about the French alive! Let’s call our video: “WHY DID THE FRENCH COLLAPSE SO QUICKLY?” 😂😂😂 History Hit? I can think of something that rhymes with “Hit” that this channel should be called.

Great film footage. Good mention that the Belgians and the Dutch insisted on remaining neutral. About that - The Netherlands had sat out WWI - so - they did have some reason to believe that they could sit out this one too. That and they were indefensible. The Belgians though - had been invaded in WWI and had every reason to believe they would be invaded again. They, however, went into denial and clung to their "Neutrality" past all sense. The Germans had in fact (something you left out) been planning on doing exactly what they did in WWI - in putting their primary thrust through Northern Belgium just as with the von Schlieffen Plan. However - a German staff plane - carrying the plans for the invasion - came down in Belgium and was captured. The Belgians turned over the plans to the British and French - but when they wanted to enter Belgium and set up - the Belgians insisted on remaining neutral. This was mindbogglingly stupid. *_THEY HAD THE PLANS FOR THEIR INVASION IN THEIR HANDS!!!!!!_* For them to not allow the British and the French in - was utterly unbelievable. Make no mistake - THIS - is the primary reason the Allies lost in 1940. The Belgians had built up about as good an Army as Belgium could support - but - THEY just didn't have the troops to man a line that could stop the Germans. IF the French had been able to come in - and emplace a line of French Infantry Corps through the Ardennes - they could stop the Germans - IF - the British committed the bulk of the RAF to the defense of the continent - instead of keeping it back to defend Britain. Because their Plans had been captured THAT is why Manstein proposed going through the Ardennes. Going through the Ardennes was stupid - as the Germans found out in 1944 - but having no one there - was worse. There were 2 Belgian Cavalry divisions in the whole of the Ardennes and for the most part - the Germans never even noticed they were there. There were a number of things wrong with the French Military but - maintaining such a static line that the Germans couldn't turn - was just the type of thing it _could_ do. What it could not do - was handle a War of Maneuver - and that is what the Belgians allowed the Germans to have. .

Anyone interested should do a deep dive on the facts of the killings in White Chapel, and pay close attention to the eyewitness reports. In any investigation, the shortest distance between two points, is always a straight line. And there are at least 14 people on record who saw the various White Chapel victims speaking to their killer no more than 30 minutes to an hour before the body was found. And it's very clear by their independent descriptions, that all of them are describing the same individual. With that in mind, please be aware of the following known facts. 1. serial killers often change their method of operation. It's part of their devious personality, and a well documented phenomenon. And in Frederick Bailey Deeming's case it came out of acts of desperation. He was a bigamist. And when her money ran dry, he either killed her, or he bolted. In one such case, the wife tracked him down. And this resulted in her murder, along with the murders of his own children. 2. Deeming's wives and children variously, either A) had their throats cut 'twice' (precisely the same as the Ripper victims) or B) were hit in the head with a small axe of the exact size that was used in the butchering of the Ripper's fifth victim. 3. Jack the Ripper muzzled his victims using handkerchiefs doused in an early form of chloroform. (They found one such handkerchief left behind at the site of one of his victims.) More such handkerchiefs were also found by the Australian authorities in the pockets of a peacoat in Frederick Bailey Deeming's flat. And all were doused in the same early form of chloroform. By the way, the peacoat was covered in dried human blood. Australian authorities also found two hats. Both matching eyewitness descriptions, re: the White Chapel killings. And there were also numerous newspaper articles Deeming kept, re: the killings in White Chapel. Using a fountain pen, he made notations on these papers, repeatedly mocking eyewitness accounts of his 'carroty mustache.' When Deeming was arrested by the Australian authorities, the first thing he did was take a broken bottle from the floor of his cell, and shaved off his mustache. Yet, there were no witnesses to his crimes in Australia, and therefore no need for him to change his appearance. 4. There was also a small box found in Deeming's flat covered in newspaper print which held a small axe and several knives; all covered in dried human blood. Two such knives -- or surgical instruments -- exactly like those used in the Ripper killings, were taken by Deeming to a local diamond cutter in Australia for cleaning. He told them they were covered in animal blood. But they quickly determined it was human blood and contacted the police. And none of the killings Deeming was ultimately arrested for in Australia involved surgical knives. i.e. these were not the knives used to cut the throats. But they were reported to have been the specific type of knives used in the disembowelment process associated with the killings in White Chapel. 5. Pathologists at Scotland Yard traveled by boat to Australia and conferred with the Australian pathologists, and all agreed that both Deeming's victims as well as the victims in White Chapel, were both killed by the same hand. 6. It has also been confirmed by documentation in possession of the Australian historical society (whom maintain the former insane asylum where Deeming was hung), that Deeming was not in South Africa at the time of the murders in the White Chapel area. Additionally, he was also not jailed. He was actually working for a dressmaker very near the White Chapel area. And during the White Chapel killings, one of his coworkers notified Scotland Yard that Deeming showed her newspaper reports of the killings in White Chapel, and mocked the police for not knowing as much about the killings as they should. 7. At least three of the eye witnesses who reported the person last seen with one of the five White Chapel victims, specifically notated that in addition to speaking to the victim, he seemed to be speaking to someone who was not present. Someone over his shoulder. When Deeming was arrested and placed in a cell, he immediately began speaking to someone who was not there. This turned out to be his deceased mother. 7. Deeming confessed. To his attorney and his doctor, he stated that the first of the White Chapel victims had given him neurosyphilis. This was his motive for all five killings. 8. To this very day Scotland Yard and The Crown each tell people than when the killer is revealed, it will be a Polish Jew. Today, you could probably find a person who matches all the eye witness reports (Caucasian with red hair), who is both Polish and Jewish. But in 1888, there was no such animal. And they know it. They are embarrassed because he was right under their nose the entire time. And they do not want the world knowing that the most infamous serial killer in history, was an Englishman. 9. Two of the Scotland Yard inspectors associated with the original investigation, notated in their memoirs that the killer was caught and was hung in an asylum. They did not notate the location of said asylum. Many Ripperologists merely assume it was somewhere in London. Deeming was hung in an asylum in Australia that doubled as a prison. 10. Frederick Bailey Deeming reportedly showed signs of psychosis from a very young age. And was actually a murder suspect at the age of 9. 11. When Deeming was arrested in Australia, two of the eye witnesses to the White Chapel murders returned to Scotland Yard with copies of newspapers with his photo prominently displayed on the front page, and identified Deeming as the man they saw speaking to the victim. 11. There's so much more. Most researchers either discount it because there's simply too much information for their minds to process, or because they have their precious conspiracy theory and they have a book to sell. But as stated, the shortest distance between two points in any investigation, always turns to be a straight line. Deeming was right there. Right underneath their noses. And the more you research multiple sources of documentation in those killings, the more you see it could only have been Frederick Bailey Deeming.

Did he kill his wife? Almost certainly. Why else would you brutalise the body afterwards bit weird to do that to someone who has genuinely killed themselves. Was he the Whitechapel Murderer? Fuck no - he got what he wanted infamy. Without him ever bringing up JtR to the police he’d just be another wife murderer long forgotten like they should be.

The Ripper case is very much a choose your own suspect affair. My favourite is the butcher delivery fellow who was observed on the scene, leaning over the body, by the very first witness of the very first murder. Unfortunately, the police were distracted by their own prejudice. They thought that the murders were so depraved, the murderer must be someone who presented as depraved. Or a foreigner. Or a Jew. I believe they eventually found two suspects who satisfied all three categories. There is absolutely no reason to believe that anyone who otherwise came to the attention of authorities for any prejudicial reason would be more likely to be a violent murderer than someone who managed to evade being viewed with suspicion. People who grow up with severe problems learn how socially unacceptable it is to let them show, and so become very good at behaving as normally as possible. In this case, I am unwilling to believe that the actual "Ripper" would identify himself as Jack the Ripper. The meaning of the graffiti is more likely that they see, after the act, that they are just like the famous Ripper. The reenactment shows just how much more soft modern juries are. The original one quickly chose to err on the side of punishment. I'm surprised that the so-controversial angle of the ligature mark was never mentioned to be more likely caused by a standing perpetrator over a seated victim. This would accord with the suspect's own testimony that he found his wife slumped over on the floor. It's common for violent criminals to not consciously recognise what they're doing at the moment they're doing it, but to come to and see what happened moments later. He could maintain to himself that he doesn't know what happened; she must have done it to herself.

to add onto the last question about a possible restoration of the Republic, the senate had opportunities to restore the Republic if it wanted, but they never acted on it. I think later in history, people looked back at particularly the late republican period as a very chaotic time. There was a lot of social upheaval and disastrous civil wars led by militaristic strongmen, and the imperial system solved that power struggle for good (kind of). It seems to me like there was no real desire to go back to that system. There's also fact that by the time of Augustus, the Roman empire had grown much, much larger than it had been in, say, the Mid Republic. It would have been very difficult to practice administration over far flung, unruly, provinces with a republican system.
